Mui Wo, Lantau – Hong Kong’s Hidden Beauty

As travelers, when we hear ‘Hong Kong,’ what usually comes to our minds first is a bright city thrumming with life. We think of towering buildings, the iconic Victoria Harbor, or Hong Kong Disneyland. We think of Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po, full of busy street markets with rows upon rows of electronics, clothes, assorted knick-knacks and, of course, a variety of street food.

Hong Kong is, of course, home to all of that. But beyond the hustle and bustle of the city life, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away from the city center, lies a scenic town that belies the fast-paced image we usually have of Hong Kong.

Located within the mountains of Lantau Island, the town of Mui Wo offers a nice break to weary travelers who want to get away from the city and take a quiet breather.

The town center is a stone’s throw away from the beach, where you can dip your toes to cool off – or, if you prefer to stay dry, take a leisurely walk along the Mui Wo Ferry Pier Walk and enjoy the cool sea breeze as you let your eyes feast on the beautiful scenery.

When you get tired from walking, head back to the brick-laden street and choose from among the various restaurants offering traditional Chinese food.
